A Plan for Success...

Clearfield County Historical Society

Clearfield, PA

To the People of Clearfield County:

The Clearfield County Historical Society had its modern origins in 1953 when Clearfield Countians were organizing for the county's sesquicentennial.  In 1960 the Society marked a milestone by beginning a museum in upstairs rooms at 121 E. Market St. in the Mossip Building. It was felt there was a need to house, the many valuable records, treasured possessions, family histories and other items such as the stories of our religious and educational background. The opening of this first display was on Feb. 3, 1961 and it was attended by three people. The day ended early due to a snowstorm. In 1962, two days after Christmas, the Society purchased the Kerr house at 104 East Fine Street in Clearfield,  from the P. T. Davis family. This house, along with the Carriage House has served us well. We've just this year completed the renovation of the buildings, inside and out. We are thankful to many donors who, through the years, have helped us accomplish much of the work by giving funds generously. We've come a Iong way since those early days, and we are moving into the future.  As President Kennedy said, in his inauguraladdress, "The torch is passed to a new generation".

You are probably aware of our recent acquisition of the building on Van Valzah Alley. The building has been named "The William B. Alexander V Research Center," to honor Mr. Alexander whose family gave the funds to buy the property. Plans are drawn for the renovation of that building to make an up-to-date research facility for the use of our members and the visiting public. The Kerr house has become too small to house our research materials and to accommodate our researchers. Recent shelf space in the converted dining room has been filled and our collection

continues to grow. The visitors who come for research have increased as well. Last year alone, we had genealogical researchers from 34 states and 2 foreign countries.

The William B. Alexander V Research Center will be devoted only for research and will help us consolidate our genealogical and historical records to provide adequate study areas for our researchers. It will free up much-needed, space in the Kerr house for museum display. The new building as it stands is in a great location, just across the back alley from our museum and easily maintained when compared with our Victorian home.

We address this letter to you to ask you to consider making a generous donation towards the development of this center. Just having the building met one goal, and now we must make the facility accessible, which means reconfiguring the inside for handicapped use including a new restroom, and putting the split-Ievel floor plan all on one level. Shelving and furniture will have to be purchased and handicapped parking, ramps and doors need to be added. Blueprints have been drawn for this construction and donated to the Society by Chris Bohley and Hughes Engineering. We are projecting a need for $200,000 to accomplish our goal for this building and getting it open for use, and we wish to establish an endowment fund to help run the research center in the years to come.

We believe that Clearfield Countians can be proud of the work that the Society has done, and now it represents the pioneers who came here and our ancestors who helped develop our heritage. Please consider a special one-time, generous gift or pledge to help us achieve the dreams of this new research facility.
